According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration there are about 43,000 people killed in fatal car accidents each year in the United States. Roughly, 40 percent of the fatal crashes are alcohol-related. In addition to fatal accidents, about 2.9 million people are injured each year.

Local and state law enforcement agencies will be participating in a Booze It and Lose It campaign during the holiday season to crack down on drunk drivers.

Captain Everett Clendenin with the North Carolina Highway Patrol said the initiative will begin today and run through New Year’s Day.

Captain Clendenin also wants to urge drivers to slow down this Christmas season. He said last year, 20 people were killed and 668 were injured in wrecks on North Carolina roads during the Christmas and New Year’s weeks. Clendenin went on to say that in most cases, speed caused these wrecks. Clendenin said patrols will be increasing the number of troopers on interstates and heavily traveled corridors to crack down on motorists who are driving recklessly or at excessive speeds.
